When I was visiting Melbourne, Australia in December 2016, I spent a few days just walking around with a friend and photographing my “feeling” of Melbourne. I’ve always hated photographing famous sites or buildings, so I was trying to capture and communicate the vibe so I could take that back home and share it.

Melbourne is a city that is both sleek and grungy. My strongest memory of Melbourne is all the vivid street art, which very much reminds me of my home in Seattle. The other thing Melbourne is well known for are its narrow, crowded laneways. This is where the fun begins.

During one of my treks through a laneway, I chanced upon a punk rock cellist. The amount of care, emotional, and excitement he was putting into his work inspired me, so I spent several moments photographing him.

These were some of my favorite shots from that day.
